Captain Verdeterre's Plunder

by Ryan Veeder

I liked this game. The prose was chock-full of a breezy wry humor, and the game was bug free and well implemented from a technical viewpoint. Consequently, the gameplay was free of the frustration that spoils some IF.

The game takes place on a sinking pirate ship from which you must excape with enough plunder to live well, if and when you manage to save yourself and your captain. The rising water as the ship sank gave the game a sense of excitment that greatly enhanced my enjoyment. Fortunately, there is not a lot to do but grab things as you move through a ship that is sinking into a watery grave. The cash value of the things you manage to grab determines your score at the end of the game.

The locations descriptions were a little less terse for my taste. I've never been on a pirate ship, and I would have appreciated a few more words so I could have added more detail to my internal imagery of what one looked like, or at least what Ryan thinks they look like.  (That would have been fun, eh?) However, that sparsness did not detract from the playability of the game and, the ending to the game was quite satisfying.
